The high rise buildings lightning protection design has become a growing issue for two decades.
Firstly, the designers and contractors are facing an increasing demand for high rise buildings, especially in the fast-developing countries: investors are requiring higher and higher structures, either to cope with the high price of land or for “prestige” and marketing purposes.
Secondly, the lightning protection standards have been renewed (especially the new IEC 62 305 series in 2006) and now include specific measures for building higher than 60m (NF C 17 102 F7 for ESE air terminals).
Thirdly, with higher structures, engineers are questioned on the “side flashes” risks.
This document intends to propose economically-sounded engineering solutions for the lightning protection of high rise buildings including the latest standards requirements.
