New Technical Guidelines for Airport Lightning Protection System design
In May 2010, the Subang airport (Kuala Lumpur – Malaysia) was struck by lightning, creating three holes in the middle of the runway, each one averaging 60cm in diameter and 15cm deep! With more than 14,000 ICAO registered airports worldwide, lightning incidents occur very regularly, leading to ATC inability to operate, ground staff wounded or killed by lightning or explosion of fuel storage tanks.
How can the designers combine the large airport infrastructures specifications (enclosing terminals buildings, maintenance halls, ATC, fuel tanks, taxiways and airplane parking) with the LPS standards requirements to optimize both the safety and the cost efficiency? This is the purpose of these well documented technical guidelines with practical solutions for Designers and Contractors.
